For four decades we have lived and worked in Pithapuram. In that time we have come to know this town the way you only can by staying in one place — which purohit performs which ritual properly, how the temple timings shift through Karthika Masam and Pitru Paksha, which road is quicker when the rains come, and where a family of twelve can be fed at four in the morning before a ceremony.

That knowledge does not stop at the town boundary. Our ground familiarity runs roughly two hundred kilometres in every direction — the Pancharama temples at Samalkot and Draksharama, Annavaram on its hill, the Godavari at Rajahmundry, the coast at Kakinada and Uppada, and as far as Visakhapatnam. When a family asks whether they can fit Annavaram and Draksharama into the same day, we answer from experience rather than from a map.
